Socks and Sandals

One thing I like about Facebook is the little "on this day" reminders.  Usually they make me smile, sometimes they jolt me.
A few weeks ago I got a notification that I had a memory with my grandma.  Curious about what that memory would have been, I anxiously followed the link.
Grandma joined Facebook, probably just to keep up with her grand-kids, but never really posted much or used it to communicate with me.  If you scroll through her stream you will find her tagged in dozens of photos and many messages written to her from her friends and family but rarely anything she posted.  It was a surprise when I realized this memory on my Facebook page was actually something she posted to me!

Her post simply said "I'll explain socks and sandals to you next time you visit".
I read the words and my heart stopped.
I don't think she ever explained the mystery of socks and sandals before she died.
Why didn't I just call her and ask?  Now I will never know, I'll never understand.
Or did she tell me and I just forgot?

She did rock the socks and sandals.  Maybe "rock" it is not a good descriptor.
Grandma had a sweet wardrobe.  She had jewelry, shoes and outfits for days.  She had pantsuits, skirt suits, dress pants, pumps to match everything and a selection of jewelry for that extra something to tie it all together. Grandma figured out a way to be stylish and comfortable.  Well, except for the socks and sandals thing, it may have been comfortable but it was not stylish.
I remember shortly before her big trip to Washington she asked my sister and I to consult on her "train outfit".  Swoon.  My 84 year old grandma was planning her train outfit.  I think her blood runs through my veins! I imagine her doing just what I do before a trip...she lays out the outfits that she thinks will work best for each day depending on activities planned, minimizing the number of shoes and belts requires so as to save room for extra "options".  She was always put together.  Whether a casual look for the beach or spruced up for church, she never wore anything less than a complete outfit.
How does a woman who is so fashionable and methodical about what she wears choose to wear socks and sandals?  It is a burning question.  One I will not know the answer to in my lifetime.

I don't necessarily believe in people sending messages down from heaven but I totally welcome grandma letting me know about the socks and sandals....... and any other golden advice that I didn't take the time to learn.
